Pesach (Greek), the Rite of Spring, the Festival of Unleavened Bread, also locally called Jewish Easter in Poland, and in Christian literature - Passover, i.e. the Jewish Passover - the most important and oldest Jewish holiday in the annual cycle, commemorating the liberation of the Israelites from Egyptian captivity. The name of the holiday probably refers to the biblical descriptions of "crossing" (God over the houses of Israel in Egypt, the Israelites by the sea) or "bypassing" during the last of the Egyptian plagues of those houses of Israel whose doors were sprinkled with the blood of a lamb. The feast begins on the 15th of the month of Nisan.
